Did you know flamingos are born white and later turn pink in color?
Wondering why I’m talking about Flamingos when you clicked to read about some super antioxidant? Well, Flamingos eat food (organisms) that’s rich in a chemical compound called Astaxanthin which gives them the pink hue. It’s not just the Flamingos, but shrimps, crabs and even salmon get their pink power from this wonder compound as well which is a ‘super antioxidant’ that is 65 times more powerful than Vitamin C. Astaxanthin has also been found to benefit the skin and shown to help improve skin moisture levels, elasticity and smoothness thus firming skin and reducing wrinkles, redness and spots.
I was recently introduced to Hwajin Cosmetics, Yeblang Special A Star Essence that’s rich in Astaxanthin (from Haematococcus Pluvialis Extract) and as a skincare addict I was super excited to try this Korean beauty!
Water, Butylene Glycol, Ethanol, Adenosine, glycerin, Haematococcus Pluvialis Extract, Tocopherol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Octyldodecanol, Cardiospermum Halicacabum Extract, Echium Plantagineum Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus(Sunflower) Seed Oil Unsaponifiables, Artichoke Extract, Sorbitol, Ascophyllum Nodosum Extract, Asparagopsis Armata Extract, schizophyllan, Copper tripeptide-1, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Carbomer, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Sclerotium Gum, Arginine, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Tris(Tetramethylhydroxypiperidinol) Citrate, Benzophenone-3, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Fragrance
I love the luxurious orange and gold packaging it comes in. Looks very elegant and the orange glass bottle stands out in your vanity. I already know I’m gonna recycle this bottle once I’ve used up the product 🙂 I imagined the essence to be a water-y liquid, but this one’s an orange gel-like (rather jelly-like) essence, quite thick in consistency.
The bright orange color of the essence is not from artificial coloring but from Astaxanthin.
The dropper pipette also goes through a plastic stopper in the bottle which makes it air tight except when the pipette is completely pulled out. Antioxidants can break down upon contact with air, and I think this feature in the bottle is fantastic!
You only need about three to four drops of the essence for your entire face. It turns a bit slimy as you massage it onto the face (Reminds me of Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair) and takes a while to get absorbed. Once absorbed it leaves a slightly tacky finish, typical gel like. But this goes away soon after you apply your serum/moisturizer on top.
The essence is almost odorless, smells slightly citrusy but nothing too strong. I used it for just over a week and I noticed my skin is much more hydrated while using it. The sad part is, it breaks me out every time I use it.
I really like the feel of the essence and like using it at night. But this is also safe to be used during the day. I can’t really comment on the firming effects claim as my skin doesn’t have many wrinkles, but it does hydrate the skin very well.
Hwajin Cosmetics Yeblang Special A Star Essence retails for ₩49,800 (USD 43.20 or QAR 157.34) and can be purchased here. Hwajin products are unavailable outside of China and Korea. But if you did get your hands on one of these from any other merchandiser, it may very well be fake!
